Childcare Expense Information
Tip
If you paid a childcare center, sitter, day camp, or other care provider to care for a qualifying dependent child under age 13 when the care was provided, you may be eligible for a tax credit of up to 35 percent of qualifying expenses of $3,000 for one dependent, or up to $6,000 for two or more dependents. Qualifying expenses do not include private school fees, overnight camp fees, or sporting fees not related to care.

Tuition Information
Tip
An education credit helps with the cost of higher education by reducing the amount of tax owed on your tax return. If the credit reduces your tax to less than zero, you may get a refund if the student is in one of their first 4 years of undergraduate school. If the student attended a university based in the U.S., they should receive Form 1098-T which reports the amount of eligible expenses. While some, but not all, foreign schools are also eligible for education related benefits, it is less likely you will receive Form 1098-T from that university. Instead, obtain copies of the expenses and payments made during the year and upload it to your file.

Moving Expense Information
Tip
If you moved due to a change in your job or business location, or because you started a new job or business, you may be able to deduct your reasonable moving expenses. Your new workplace must be at least 50 miles farther from your old home than your old job location was, and you must work full-time for at least 39 weeks during the first 12 months (78 weeks during 24 months if self-employed). Deductible expenses include travel, transportation, and shipping expenses incurred by you and your family, if claimed on your return.

Student Loan Interest Information
Tip
You may be able to deduct interest you pay on a qualified student loan. Generally, the amount you may deduct is the lesser of $2,500 or the amount of interest you paid. It is subject to a phaseout, which means the amount of the deduction gradually decreases and phases out completely if your modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) amount reaches the annual limit. You should receive a Form 1098-E, either in the mail or online, that reports the amount of interest paid.

U.S. IRA Contribution Information
Tip
You still may be able to contribute to an IRA if you are living and working abroad. Contributions to IRAs are limited to the lesser of $5,500 ($6,500 if 50 or over) or your taxable compensation for the year. If you exclude all your income using the foreign earned income exclusion, you are unable to contribute to a Traditional or Roth IRA because the amount of taxable compensation would be $0. However, claiming a tax credit for foreign taxes in lieu of excluding your income does not have the same effect. In this case, you still may be able to contribute depending on your employer retirement plan status and gross income. For more information on IRA contribution limits, please refer to this IRS article
Traditional IRA Information
Tip
Traditional IRA contributions can be tax deductible for the year in which you make the contribution, up to the April tax filing deadline. However, the amount of any possible deduction depends on your filing status, whether you or your spouse, if filing jointly, contributed to a U.S. employer plan during the year, and your modified gross income. If you and your spouse are not participating in a U.S. employer plan, a full deduction is allowed.

Roth IRA Information
Tip
Roth IRAs are a good investment to defer earnings in a retirement account and benefit from tax-free income upon retirement. While you can't deduct contributions to a Roth IRA, the benefits for these plans come upon receiving the income after you reach the age of 59 ½. The one drawback to Roth IRAs is that they have phaseout ranges where you are no longer eligible to contribute to the plans due to your income level. The eligible ranges can be viewed on this IRS article

SEP Plan Information
Tip
SEP plans are popular U.S. retirement investments for self-employed individuals. There are a couple of major distinctions with SEP plans when compared to other forms of IRAs. For one, contributions are not limited to the $5,500 ($6,500) max, but rather calculated based on your net earnings from self-employment. Secondly, excluding income does not generally affect your ability to contribution to an SEP plan like it does with other types of IRAs. For more information on retirement plans for self-employed individuals, please refer to this IRS article

Mortgage Interest Information
Tip
The deduction for mortgage interest is one of the more popular deductions expats have at their disposal. The deduction is allowed for interest paid on a primary and secondary, non-rental home during the year. This is true whether the property is located within the U.S. or abroad.

U.S. Personal Property Tax Information
Tip
State and local personal property taxes charged on assets are eligible for a deduction. However, foreign property/council taxes and wealth taxes are not eligible for the deduction. You are entitled to claim the amount of personal property taxes you actually paid during the year, even if they were levied in previous years.

Medical Expense Information
Tip
Medical expenses can only be claimed if they exceed 10% of your gross income (7.5% if you or your spouse is 65 or older). In addition, only the amount of expenses that exceed this threshold are eligible. Due to such high thresholds, medical expenses are seldom claimed on expat returns. Before digging through and uploading all your receipts, it is best to first determine whether the expense amounts would near the threshold or not.

Other Expense Information
Tip
Other eligible expenses included charitable contributions, alimony paid, unreimbursed employment expenses, last year’s tax preparation fees, and other expenses you believe may be relevant. If you are not sure whether the expense qualifies or not, please list it below and your Advisor will determine whether it can be claimed. If any single contribution amounts to $250 or more, or is related to contributing property, please upload receipts for these expenses.
