H&R Block Expat Tax Consent to Disclose FAQ

Why am I being asked to provide a written consent to the disclosure of my U.S. tax return information? 
Certain U.S. laws and regulations govern the disclosure of information providing as part of preparing a tax return. The regulations require that tax return preparers obtain their client’s knowing and voluntary consent before tax return information is disclosed to affiliates, or third parties, located outside the U.S. This consent form includes specific language mandated by the IRS for all U.S. tax return preparers. 

How will my U.S. tax information be disclosed by H&R Block Expat Tax Services? 
Acceptance of this consent may result in your tax return information being disclosed to an H&R Block tax return preparer located outside the United States, including your personally identifiable information such as your Social Security Number (“SSN”). Assistance for your U.S.-based tax advisor from H&R Block tax preparers located outside the U.S. may be used either for preparation of the local tax return, where possible, or certain administrative and support services necessary in the preparation of your U.S. tax return. 

Is my tax return information protected? 
We are committed to monitoring and protecting your personal data, 24/7. We use external security experts to perform audits and assess potential risks. We physically secure our data centers, networks, and servers. Our international affiliates maintain an adequate data protection safeguard as required by U.S. law (26 U.S.C. Section 7216). H&R Block tax associates located outside of the U.S. work under the direct supervision and oversight of the U.S.-based entity H&R Block Expat Tax Services. 

How long is my consent valid and how long is my tax return information retained? 
If you do not specify the duration of your consent, your consent is valid for one year from the date of signature. The information we collect is retained for as long as needed or as required by law. We retain your information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide you services. We may use your information as necessary to comply with our policies, legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce our agreements. In addition, the IRS requires us to retain filed tax returns for a period of at least three years.
